At Stepping Stones we created this space to give you ideas of what you can do with your child at home.
Our nursery had to close temporarily but we are still here, so please visit our blog daily for your child to continue learning with us at Stepping Stones!
Let's begin with phonics.
Before we broke-up I was approached by a couple of parents, whose children will be leaving to school in September, and asked about how to teach phonics.
At Stepping Stones all our school-leavers take part in a phonic session at least twice per week.
We learn one sound per week and revise the ones we have learned previously. This week we will be starting where we left off and learn about 'l'.
The videos below show you how the phonic session is structured, when we do it at Stepping Stones. I hope that you will find them helpful.
In addition to that at Stepping Stones we would always provide 'a number and letter-rich environment'.
That means that the children can see letters around them all the time, in displays, books and labels.
They can explore them and play with them.
In order to provide a letter-rich environment at home you can:
- read books with your child and make sure that books are available at all times.
- teach your child to recognise familiar words, like their name or some labels they might have encountered. Can they recognise the words like: Disney, Gruffalo, Sainsbury's?
- engage your child in meaningful mark-making. Are you going shopping? Could your child make a shopping list? Perhaps they could make drawings of items you need to buy and make familiar letters to label them?

Happy learning and good luck! Please do let me know if you have any requests for specific learning activities.
